LOA (Letter of Authenticity)

A detailed document providing a full opinion on an autograph's genuineness.

A Letter of Authenticity (LOA) is a comprehensive document issued by an authentication company that provides a detailed written opinion on an autograph's genuineness. LOAs are more thorough than sticker-only authentication and are typically required for higher-value items.

A full LOA typically includes: a description of the item examined, the authentication company's opinion on the signature's genuineness, the methodology used for comparison, a photo of the item, and a unique certification number.

JSA is perhaps the best known for their full LOA service. For items valued above certain thresholds, most reputable auction houses require a full LOA rather than just a sticker authentication. This is especially true for items valued at $1,000 or more.

The cost of a full LOA is typically higher than sticker-only authentication — often $50-100+ compared to $20-30 for a basic sticker authentication. However, for valuable items, the investment is worthwhile as an LOA provides stronger assurance and broader market acceptance.

When selling or consigning high-value autographed items, having a full LOA from PSA, JSA, or Beckett will generally result in higher selling prices and broader buyer confidence compared to items with only sticker authentication or no authentication.
