Photo Match

Verifying game-used items by comparing them to high-resolution game photographs.

Photo matching is the process of comparing a claimed game-used item (jersey, bat, helmet, gloves, etc.) against high-resolution photographs taken during actual games to verify that the item was indeed used in competition.

This technique has become increasingly important and sophisticated with the rise of high-definition photography and services like MeiGray, Resolution Photomatching, and Sports Investors Authentication that specialize in this verification.

Photo matchers look for unique identifiers: specific wear marks, stains, repairs, stitching patterns, manufacturer tags, and other characteristics that make each piece of equipment unique. A positive match provides strong evidence of game use.

Photo-matched items command significant premiums over items with only general game-use claims. A photo-matched jersey from a milestone game can be worth 2-5x more than a comparable jersey without photo documentation.

While photo matching can provide strong circumstantial evidence, it's not foolproof. The best provenance combines photo matching with league authentication programs (MLB Authenticated, MeiGray for NHL) and documented chain of custody.
