Illustrative: one quote includes shipping

Provider A’s quote includes return shipping; Provider B lists it separately. The two headline authentication fees are not enough to compare the totals.

Put included costs in one place and confirm any remaining charges before comparing completed budgets.

Illustrative: two items have different fees

A single-signed photo and a multi-signed ball receive different quotes. Multiplying either fee by two would misstate the order cost.

Keep separate per-item calculations, then count shared order charges only once in your final worksheet.

What does autograph authentication cost?

Start with the exact object and the service you want. Record every signer, the item type, any existing certification and the documentation you expect back. A signed card, a multi-signed ball and a large framed display need separate service and packing questions.

Ask for an itemized quote. Authentication, an autograph grade, a letter upgrade, encapsulation and shipping may be different choices. Do not assume a card-grading price covers autograph authentication or that an optional extra is included.

A total is useful only when you know what it covers. If a fee cannot be confirmed, leave it blank in the calculator and keep the result marked incomplete.

Where to check PSA, JSA and Beckett fees

PSA’s autograph service page provides a submission-price lookup, return-shipping information and a submission form. Match the quoted service to your item, then use the current form and packaging instructions.

Use JSA’s official fee list and service descriptions to check the signer and the type of certification. Ask JSA about any item or combination of signatures that does not have a clear listed fee.

Availability check, September 26, 2026: Beckett’s official status page says new Beckett Authentication Services submissions are temporarily unavailable while existing orders continue to be processed. Check the status again before arranging a new submission. An open card-grading service is not confirmation that autograph submissions are open.

How to calculate the complete submission budget

For items with identical fees: multiply the number of items by the authentication fee plus selected extras per item. Add outbound shipping, return shipping, additional insurance, packing supplies, tax and other order charges once.

Use separate budgets when item fees differ or orders will ship separately. Do not count insurance twice if it is already included in a shipping quote. Confirm the currency; this tool works in US dollars and does not convert exchange rates.

Illustrative arithmetic, not a provider quote: two items with a $35 authentication fee and $5 of extras each cost $80 before order charges. Add $12 outbound shipping, $18 return shipping, $6 additional insurance and $4 packing, with $0 other charges confirmed: the estimated total is $120.

The calculator shows a known subtotal while any cost is blank. It uses the figures you enter and cannot check provider availability, a quote’s completeness or a future invoice.

What is the cheapest way to authenticate an autograph?

Compare complete quotes for the service you actually need. A local event may change shipping or travel costs; an advertised event special may apply only to particular items or signatures obtained at that event. Confirm eligibility, admission, appointment rules and what documentation you receive before going.

Do not use a photo-only opinion price as the price of full authentication. We could not verify a current official JSA photo-only Quick Opinion ordering option in this review, so this guide does not advertise a fee for it.

101 Pre-Screen is AI-powered preliminary screening, not a certificate of authenticity. A scan does not guarantee that an item will pass a professional examination, avoid a fee or sell for more.

Photo opinions and full authentication: the differences

How long will authentication take, and what if it fails?

Confirm the provider’s current estimate, when the processing clock starts, shipping time and any deadline you need to meet. PSA explicitly describes turnaround times as estimates rather than guarantees. Build your plans around the provider’s current terms.

Before paying, ask which charges apply if a signature is rejected, a result is inconclusive or the item is ineligible. Ask whether any charge is refundable and what happens to return shipping. Do not assume the examination fee buys a passing result.

If your goal is resale, compare the full submission cost with evidence from genuinely similar sold items. Authentication does not guarantee a profitable sale. Sentimental, documentation and selling goals can lead to different decisions.

Keep the quote, not just the total

Save the quote reference and date checked with your completed budget. Record open questions before submitting so an unknown fee does not disappear into a zero.

The downloaded worksheet and copied calculator summary are your own files. They do not create a provider order or automatically attach to a Vault record. Keep your research available when you document the piece.

Before-you-buy review

Keep the questions, missing evidence and your own purchase limits in one place.

  1. Record the exact item, claimed signer and version being offered.
  2. Request whole-item photos, a sharp signature close-up and condition details.
  3. Separate the seller's claims from supporting signing or acquisition records.
  4. Record the price, shipping, fees and your own maximum total budget.
  5. Write down unresolved questions before deciding whether to proceed.
Certificate research file

Keep the claimed issuer, item comparison and unresolved mismatches together.

  1. Identify the claimed issuer from the label or certificate.
  2. Find the issuer's official lookup or support channel independently.
  3. Compare the issuer record, item description, label and actual piece.
  4. Record mismatches or missing information without treating a number match as authentication.
  5. Keep your questions and any response date for the next review.
Comparable-sales research

Build a repeatable record of relevant sold examples instead of relying on asking prices.

  1. Define the exact item type, signer, version and condition you are researching.
  2. Record a completed sale's source, date, currency and available price details.
  3. Note differences in authentication, inscriptions, condition and item type.
  4. Keep asking prices and unconfirmed sales separate from completed-sale evidence.
  5. Describe the limits of your comparison; do not turn a few examples into a guaranteed value.
Collection documentation plan

Organize a piece's history and the records you still need to gather.

  1. Describe a piece you own and its identifying details.
  2. List the photos, receipts and supporting records you have.
  3. Separate documented acquisition history from recollection or seller claims.
  4. Record condition observations and where supporting files are kept.
  5. Choose what to add to your private Vault after reviewing the information.

The interactive workspace requires JavaScript and a free account. Gold and Emerald add saving and updating across devices. Playbooks share the existing Research Shelf allowance: Gold 25 plans; Emerald 100.

A completed checklist is not authentication or an appraisal. Previewing does not save a record, start a scan or charge you.
