Through the Mail (TTM) Autograph Collecting

TTM is one of the most affordable and rewarding ways to collect autographs. Send a letter, include your item, and wait for the magic of getting signed memorabilia delivered to your mailbox.

How to Collect TTM Autographs

Write a Personal Letter

Include a brief, genuine letter explaining why you admire the person and what the autograph would mean to you. Personal letters get significantly higher response rates than generic requests.

Prepare Your Item

Include a pre-addressed, stamped return envelope (SASE). Use a quality item — a clean photo, trading card in a top loader, or index card. Include a blue Sharpie for convenience.

Find the Right Address

Use TTM databases, fan mail services, team addresses, or sports agency contacts. Verify addresses are current — athletes move, retire, and change agents frequently.

Package Carefully

Use rigid mailers or cardboard backing to prevent bending. Write "DO NOT BEND — PHOTOS" on the envelope. Include enough return postage for the weight of all items.

Be Patient

TTM responses can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2+ years. Track your requests in a spreadsheet with dates sent. Some athletes batch-sign fan mail periodically.

Track & Document Returns

When items come back, photograph them immediately. Note the date sent and received, turnaround time, and any inscriptions. This builds your TTM success database.

Tips for Higher Success Rates

Keep it Short

Your letter should be 3-5 sentences max. Athletes and celebrities receive hundreds of letters — they won't read a novel. Be concise, sincere, and specific.

Send to Spring Training / Preseason

Athletes are more relaxed during preseason. Send TTM requests to spring training facilities (baseball) or training camp addresses (football) for better response rates.

Target Retired Players

Retired athletes often have more time and enjoy the continued fan attention. Response rates for retired players are significantly higher than active stars.

One Item Per Request

Don't overwhelm with multiple items. One item shows respect for their time and increases the chance they'll sign and return it. You can always send another request later.

Include a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope

This is non-negotiable. Without a SASE, your item likely won't come back. Use proper postage — undersized return envelopes or insufficient stamps are common mistakes.
