- Check whether the signer has item limits, inscription fees or item restrictions.
- Decide which items you will bring and what you want signed on each.
- Plan where on each item the signature should go.
- Set a budget for tickets, extra autographs and parking.

- Test every pen on scrap paper the night before.
- Ballpoint pens for baseballs, where that is your preference.
- Top loaders, penny sleeves or a binder for cards.
- A hard tube or rigid sleeve for photos and posters.
- A clean, soft cloth and a small bag to carry everything.
Item prep
- Wipe items so the surface is clean and dry.
- Pre-sleeve cards and pull them only when it is your turn.
- Have the item uncapped, oriented and ready, with the pen in hand.
- Write any inscription request on a sticky note to hand over.
At the table
- Be polite, be quick and follow the staff's instructions.
- Let ink dry before sleeving or stacking items.
- Ask before taking photos, and take one of the moment if allowed.
After the signing
- Photograph each signed item in good light.
- Keep your ticket, receipt or event photo with the item.
- Log the item, date, event and any inscription in your collection.
- Store signed items away from direct sunlight and heat.
Frequently asked questions
What pen should I bring to an autograph signing?
It depends on the item. Many collectors use blue or black permanent markers on photos and cards, paint pens on darker or glossy surfaces, and ballpoint on baseballs. Bring spares and test them beforehand.
How do I keep a signature from smudging?
Let the ink dry fully before touching, sleeving or stacking the item. Glossy surfaces can take longer to dry, so give them extra time.
Should I keep my signing ticket?
Yes. Keeping your ticket, receipt and a photo from the event with the item gives you a record of where and when it was signed.
Can I print this checklist?
Yes. Use the print button on this page. A free Autographs 101 account also lets you log each signed item afterward.
Is Autographs 101 free?
You can create a free account to log your collection. Paid memberships add extra features, which you can compare on the membership page.
