Witnessed

An authentication method where a representative is physically present during signing.

Witnessed authentication is the gold standard of autograph authentication. It refers to the process where a representative from an authentication company (PSA, JSA, or Beckett) is physically present when the item is signed, providing firsthand verification.

Because the authenticator directly observes the signing, there is zero doubt about who signed the item. This eliminates the possibility of forgery, secretarial signatures, autopen, or any other form of non-authentic autograph.

Witnessed authentication is commonly available at major sports conventions, official signing events, and select retail locations. Companies like JSA and Beckett actively promote their witnessed programs and maintain schedules of events where their representatives will be present.

Items authenticated through a witnessed program receive the same hologram stickers and certification numbers as items authenticated through the review process. However, witnessed items may be noted as "witnessed" in the authentication company's database, which can add to buyer confidence.

For collectors who attend conventions and signing events, seeking out witnessed authentication opportunities is an excellent strategy. Getting items authenticated at the point of signing saves the cost and turnaround time of mail-in authentication later.
